Traffic stop near Apopka schools triggers lockdown, multiple detentions

Students at several schools near Apopka experienced a chaotic start to the day on Friday after a traffic stop led to multiple detentions and a temporary campus lockdown. Florida Highway Patrol said a trooper pulled over a car near Apopka High School for running a stop sign. While the driver remained in the vehicle, four passengers attempted to flee. All five occupants were detained and handed over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Apopka High School was briefly put on a "secure hold" on Friday morning due to police activity in the area related to a Border Patrol operation, officials said.

During a hold procedure, students must stay in their classrooms and clear the hallways, while adults secure doors, account for everyone, and continue normal activities until an "All Clear" is given.

The hold was lifted shortly before 8 a.m.

What we know:

Officials said the situation began around 6 a.m. when the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) conducted a traffic stop near the campus on Martin Street.
