After 2 collisions, FDOT studies rail crossing at Colonial Drive

After two vehicles were struck by trains in Downtown Orlando in two separate incidents, the Florida Department of Transportation is now looking to make changes to a rail crossing at Colonial Drive near Orange Avenue and Interstate 4.

The I-4 Ultimate team had observers in that area on Friday to observe traffic flow and to see if there are any potential issues with the traffic queuing, including queuing onto railroad tracks.

SunRail contractors had previously checked the crossing gates and equipment and concluded that everything was operating as designed.

"It is vitally important that drivers stay behind the white line facing the tracks, and only proceed to the other side when there is room in traffic," said FDOT spokesperson Jessica Ottaviano. "A train can come at any time and from any direction."

There is no word from FDOT on how soon any changes might be implemented.
