Over 40 dogs and puppies were rescued Tuesday from an alleged dog fighting operation in Berkeley County, South Carolina.

The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office says Humane World for Animals, formerly called the Humane Society of the United States, and the Charleston Animal Society assisted in the rescue operation.

What we know:

The Sheriff's Office says when deputies arrived they found several dogs chained up and some standing in inches of stagnant water from recent rainfall and several other dogs and 5 puppies were contained in hutches.

Humane World for Animals says veterinarians noted many of the dogs were suffering from painful, inflamed paws, from apparently standing in waste-contaminated water for several weeks and some of the dogs have scarring on their faces and legs, consistent with organized dogfighting.

What they're saying:

"This investigation is a powerful example of what can be accomplished when law enforcement and animal welfare organizations work together to protect those who cannot protect themselves," said Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis in a release. "In Berkeley County, we take animal cruelty seriously. I am extremely proud of our investigators for the work they have put into this case. Our Sheriff’s Office will continue to take allegations of animal cruelty seriously, thoroughly investigate them and hold those responsible accountable under the law."

What's next:

Humane World for Animals transported the dogs to a safe location where responders and volunteers are caring for them.

The Sheriff's Office says the investigation continues. So far, no arrests or criminal charges have been made.
