The Florida Supreme Court has halted the planned execution of James Duckett, the Mascotte Police officer who was convicted of the brutal rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl in 1987. Duckett’s defense attorneys say DNA evidence being tested right now will prove his innocence. Results are expected back March 27th, days before his execution.

Deputies said he also attempted to get into three small planes, before he was detained. Bodycam shows the man told deputies he went to an AA meeting, then proceeded to allegedly drink and do drugs before the incident.

The shooting was reported on Tuesday around 3:50 p.m. at a home near Overlook Road and Sylvan Boulevard. Police found two men who had been shot and taken to the hospital.

When deputies responded, the man had a hatchet and would not drop it, police said. An officer shot the man. He later died at the hospital. No officers were hurt in the shooting.
