Teachers are planning a laptop drive, as some Orange County students are still waiting for a device.

Gov. Ron DeSantis said Friday that closing school campuses in the spring as the coronavirus pandemic took hold might have been one of the nation’s biggest “public health mistakes.”

He says no one had an issue with his “Black Lives Matter” backpack until Thursday when a teacher stopped him and made an issue of it. 

The school shut down last week because of 10 positive coronavirus cases.

Several Central Florida school districts say that all precautions in place will stay the same for now.

The students who are participating in face-to-face learning will reportedly move to eLearning or paper-pencil packets during the closure. 

As of the next grading period, about 15,000 more students will learn on campus, pushing 42 percent of the student into schools.

More than half of Florida students are learning in-person.

Officials said that random testing is done to see how prevalent the virus is on campus and to keep an eye on any possible outbreaks.

The Orange County school decided to switch to virtual learning for all students after six people tested positive for the virus.

Orange County Public School (OCPS) Friday night football could include cheer, band, dance and ROTC next week. 

Students in Orange County continue to struggle to get online for virtual learning. Roughly one thousand students in the district do not have the right device.
