Vanessa Trump revealed Wednesday that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer and has started a treatment plan.
Big picture view:
Saying that it "isn’t news anyone expects," Trump revealed her diagnosis in a post on Instagram and thanked her doctors for a procedure that was performed this week.

"I am staying focused and hopeful while surrounded by the love and support of my family, my kids, and those closest to me," Trump wrote in the post.
"Thank you for your kindness and support it truly means more than I can express. I kindly ask for privacy as I focus on my health and recovery.
The backstory:
Trump was previously married to Donald Trump, Jr., for 13 years and they had five children together before divorcing in 2018.
What you can do:
Detecting breast cancer early makes treating it easier and breast cancer screenings can help do that, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention points out on its website. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends that women between 40 and 74 years old who are at an average risk of breast cancer get a mammogram every two years.
The CDC also noted other available tests including MRIs, clinical exams, and self-awareness, but noted the final two have not been found to lower the risk of dying from breast cancer.
The American Breast Cancer Foundation states self-exams are not replacements for mammograms or other preventative tests, but can be important for early detection. The organization posted a guide on how to perform an at-home screening.
