Two teens dead in Lake County crash, troopers say

Two teens died in a two-car crash in Lake County on Saturday that left several others injured, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The collision occurred when a 2008 Toyota Scion driven by a 16-year-old girl from Groveland was traveling southbound on State Road 33 approaching Groveland Farms Road at 6:05 p.m., according to an FHP crash report.

A 2021 Lincoln Aviator driven by a 75-year-old Lakeland man was traveling northbound on S.R. 33 approaching the intersection. The driver of the Scion attempted to pass a vehicle in a no-passing zone and entered the northbound lanes, the report stated.

The driver of the Scion and a passenger, a 17-year-old boy, were pronounced dead at the scene. 

The driver of the Lincoln Aviator, a 75-year-old man, and three passengers, a 66-year-old woman, a 6-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. 

The crash remains under investigation.

"We are deeply saddened to confirm the tragic loss of two South Lake High School students, one Junior and one Sophomore. Our hearts go out to their families, friends, and the entire school community during this difficult time. To support students and staff as they cope with this loss, grief counselors will be available on campus throughout the week. We encourage anyone in need of assistance to reach out and take advantage of these resources. Together, we will lean on one another and provide the care and support our community needs."
