Teen arrested in Deltona carjacking case

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office says deputies have arrested a 16-year-old for the carjacking of an elderly man in Deltona.

It happened on Saturday. The victim says he had just pulled into his driveway, when someone demanded he hand over his key and pulled out a gun.

“When you see a gun – you don’t know what’s going to happen,” the 76-year-old man said.

He said the suspect pointed the gun right at him.

“I gave him the keys and he said, ‘Turn around and start walking.’ And I got kind of leery, I said, ‘Man, maybe this guy is going to shoot me when I turn around.’ And I walked around and soon as he jumped in the car he took off down the street, you know, tires squealing,” the victim explained.

Deputies say using OnStar, they tracked the man’s 2016 Corvette down fast. They say it had been abandoned at an apartment complex in Orange City and fingerprints from traced back to a 16-year-old.

“You got a 16-year-old running around with a gun, sticking it to people’s heads,” said Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood.

The teen was arrested Tuesday afternoon. Sanford Police say they’re looking into whether the teen was involved in a carjacking the day before the Corvette was stolen. In surveillance video from that case, you can see someone walk up to a woman with a gun, before taking off in her Mercedes.

Right now, the 16-year-old is only charged in the Volusia County carjacking. Chitwood says his office will ask prosecutors to charge him as an adult.
