SARASOTA, Fla. (FOX 13) - The Sarasota Police Department is investigating the deadly shooting of a teenager that took place during the early hours of Sunday morning in North Sarasota.
Officers received reports of shots fired shortly before 12:30 a.m. on Gregg Court.
When emergency crews arrived, the victim, a teenage boy, was found deceased.
Police identified the suspect in the shooting as 17-year-old James Griffin Jr. and said they have probable cause for his arrest. Griffin has not yet been taken into custody, and police said he is considered armed and dangerous.
Griffin faces charges of aggravated manslaughter of a child.
Authorities are now trying to piece together what led up to the shooting. They spent the morning talking to those in the neighborhood with the hopes of finding answers.
"Detectives have been canvassing the area for the last several hours, speaking to neighbors and to folks who may have been outside at the time of the shooting to try and figure out and piece together exactly what happened," said Genevieve Judge, the public information officer with the Sarasota Police Department.
The Sarasota Police Department is now asking for the public's help, hoping someone may have useful information about what exactly took place.
"If anyone saw anything, if they've heard anything, if folks are beginning to talk about the situation now and information is beginning to get out there, we're asking that folks please give our detectives a call," said Judge.
