Suspect shot after refusing to stop chasing female and drop gun

The Edgewater Police Department says that their officers were dispatched to a report of a shooting on Unity Tree Drive on January 1st.

Once on scene, police say that officers set up a perimeter on the residence and heard a gunshot. A white female exited the residence and screaming. Officers say they then observed a white male armed with a handgun chasing the female shooting at her. Officers ordered the man to drop the gun.

However, police say that the man refused to drop the gun and continued chasing the female. Two of the officers on scene reportedly discharged their firearm striking the male subject.

Officers say that the female ran to an officer and informed him she had been shot in the chest.

Police identified the male as 65-year-old Gary Johns. They also identified the female as 58-year-old Karen Johns. The incident occurred at their residence.

Both Gary and Karen were reportedly transported to Halifax Hospital where Gary Johns was pronounced deceased. Karen Johns' injuries were described as non-life threatening.

The officers involved are on administrative leave, as per department police.

FDLE is investigating.
