Schools begin to announce re-openings as Hurricane Dorian tracks offshore

Schools across Central Florida are starting to re-open as Hurricane Dorian tracks offshore.


Saint Leo University-Gainesville will remain closed through Tuesday, September 3. Classes also are canceled through Tuesday, September 3.  

Alachua County Public Schools will be closed on Tuesday, September 3 but will be open on Wednesday, September 4. 


Brevard County Public Schools will be closed through Thursday. They will re-open Friday, which remains an early-release day. All extra-curricular activities and athletics have been canceled though.

Eastern Florida State College is closing all campuses and will remain closed until a planned reopening on Monday, Sept. 9.

Florida Tech will resume classes at their Melbourne campus on Friday. Faculty and staff must return Thursday.


Osceola County Public Schools announced that schools will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday for Hurricane Dorian. 


All Lake County Public Schools will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday due to Hurricane Dorian.  

Lake-Sumter State College will reopen for normal operations on Thursday, Sept. 5. All classes will resume and occur as scheduled on Thursday. Faculty and staff should report to work on their normal schedules.


Marion County Public Schools will re-ope on Thursday.

College of Central Florida will resume its full schedule of classes, events, and business operations on Thursday.

Saint Leo University's Gainesville campus will be closed through Tuesday.


All Orange County Public Schools will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. They will re-open on Thursday.

OCPS schools and offices are planning to open Thursday. Student activities are planned to resume on Thursday. Elementary school open houses will be rescheduled.  Varsity football games will be moved from Friday to Monday.

Windermere Preparatory School has announced that they will be closed on Tuesday due to Hurricane Dorian. They will re-open on Thursday.

Orangewood Christian School in Maitland will be closed on Tuesday. 

All classes will remain as scheduled through Saturday, August 31. Full Sail University's campus will be closed through Wednesday. All campus classes and labs will be canceled and all students are asked to remain off campus and stay home and safe until they formally announce the re-opening of campus.

Florida A&M University has announced that due to a change in the path of Hurricane Dorian, as a precaution, today Florida A&M University (FAMU)  announced that the FAMU College of Law in Orlando and the Jacksonville, Tampa, and Brooksville satellite locations will remain closed through Thursday and is scheduled to resume normal business operations on Friday.

Due to potential effects from Hurricane Dorian, Keiser University campuses in Melbourne, Daytona Beach, and Orlando will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. Students, staff, and faculty should visit or call 1-877-353-4737 for updates.

The University of Central Florida announced Monday afternoon that it will remain closed through Thursday.  UCF will resume classes on Friday. 

The nearly 120 students who were required to move into campus ride-out locations in anticipation of hurricane-force winds have been permitted to return to their residence halls, which are safe indoor spaces given the storm's latest weakened wind and rain projections.

Police, fire and medical assistance will be able to respond in the anticipated conditions in the event any of those students requires emergency assistance. 

Rollins College has evacuated their campus. They plan to re-open it on Thursday, with classes beginning again on Friday.


Public schools and district offices in Polk County will be closed on Tuesday, Sept. 3, and Wednesday, Sept. 4, in response to Hurricane Dorian.


Seminole County Public Schools will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. They will re-open on Thursday.

In a statement, officials said, "We will continue to work with and be in full communication with the Emergency Operation Center throughout the storm. Announcements of any additional school closures will be made, if necessary, at a later date."   Makeup days will be October 17 and 18.

Due to pending hurricane, Herzing University (Winter Park) will be closed through Wednesday.  

The Master's Academy announced that they will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday.


Sumter District Schools will be closed on Monday, September 2, 2019 (Labor Day) and on Tuesday, September 3, 2019 (due to Hurricane Dorian). Class will be in session on Wednesday.

The latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center shows Dorian approaching Florida as a Category 4 hurricane. It will be a Category 1 by the time it passes over Orlando.

Volusia County Public Schools will open Friday, Sept. 6.  

Daytona State College will open Friday, Sept. 6. 

Palmer College of Chiropractic Florida campus will be closed this week. Class and clinic operations will begin again on Monday.

Stetson University says that, with only minimal water intrusion in a few buildings and a little debris scattered across campus, the DeLand campus is in the process of powering up and cleaning up after Hurricane Dorian. University officials expect to reopen on Thursday, Sept. 5, in the afternoon. Classes will resume on Friday, Sept. 6. Students, faculty and staff have been alerted.

All campuses of Palm Beach State College will be closed starting at noon on Friday, Aug. 30.
