NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Just like Saturday, Volusia County Beach Patrol was warning of rough surf conditions on Sunday.
On Saturday, lifeguards had to pull 34 people out of the water.
Beach patrol was flying the red flag again on Sunday, warning people about hazardous conditions in the water.
One of the biggest dangers were rip currents. Surfer Sean Kelly knew them well.
“We don't go out alone,” Kelly said. “We go out with parents or friends. We don't swim by ourselves. That's really it.”
They say if you get caught in a rip current, stay calm and do not fight the current. Swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the current's grip and then swim to the shore. If you can't swim out of the current, calmly float or tread water, and wave or shout for help.
Beachgoer Debbie Genton said it was something locals keep in mind.
“Yeah, you swim along til you can get out,” Genton said. “You always keep alert and look around and see what's going on.”
Beach patrol said the most important rule to follow was to always swim in view of a lifeguard.
