Rockledge man accused of making 3D-printed guns

A Brevard County man is behind bars after police say he used a 3D printer to make firearms, including one that was converted into a submachine gun.

Florida authorities are investigating a home in Rockledge related to possible illegal firearm manufacturing and hazardous materials, according to the City of Rockledge and the Rockledge Police Department.

What we know:

Rockledge police officers arrested Patrick Carman, 33, and charged him with two felony counts of possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

Carman’s arrest report reveals police responded to the home on Pennsylvania Avenue Tuesday night when a caller wanted to report stolen guns. Police said Carman showed them pictures of 3D printed guns. Police said Carman admitted to having one of the guns still with him. Police said Carman said "it was a fun project he was working on."

On Wednesday, Rockledge Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, and the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad were at the home investigating.

Police asked people to stay away. The scene cleared hours later.

What we don't know:

We are working to find out whether Carman will face additional criminal charges. Police said that was a possibility.  Documents did not disclose if police ever tracked down the guns Carman initially tried to report stolen.

What's next:

Carman’s next court date was not immediately clear.
