WINTER PARK, Fla. (FOX 35 ORLANDO) - A neighborhood in Winter Park has confirmed a second case of rabies.
Even though the rabid raccoon was found near Formosa Avenue, it may have infected other animals nearby. There is a rabies alert issued in a large Winter Park neighborhood.
"Right there. It didn't bleed so she's good." Jeremy Henderson had a close call with a rabid raccoon. He says his dog Bessy is now under a quarantine. "She made a funny bark and I turned around and there was a raccoon going towards my dog." Jeremy says he struck and killed the raccoon.
According to Orange County Animal Services, it tested positive for rabies.
Thankfully, Bessy is okay. "It was being aggressive. It was bowed up and attempted to charge the dog. I got in between and did what I had to do. Thankfully this time I didn't get hurt."
This time Jeremy is okay, but two weeks ago a cat "bit me three times here, four, five and six before I put it on the ground really hard." Jeremy and his wife Shannon weren't so lucky, after a cat came into their yard. "I actually got attacked by a cat that wound up testing positive for rabies."
Shannon showed us pictures of the puncture wounds, shortly after that attack they went to the ER "I was sitting there it started to swell and swell," he said.
A neighbor told Fox 35 that two baby raccoons have been coming to her front yard for the last nine days and they looked real sick. One of them was finally caught right here. Orange County Animal Services took that raccoon away.
While traps were left out nearby, residents wonder how dangerous it could be. Jeremy says he "still doesn't know how many more animals could be affected.
A rabies alert has been issued around the Winter Park area east of I-4, west of Orlando Avenue, south of Lee Road, and north of Orange Avenue. If you see an animal acting strangely in the daytime or at night, call animal control immediately because it's got to be stopped.
The Health Department says that all pets should have rabies immunizations. They also said to secure all outside garbage in covered containers, do not leave pet food outside, and call Orange County Animal Services at 407-254-9150 if you need to report a rabid animal.
