A Cocoa Police Department K9 is credited with a recent drug bust, while at the same time, saving a life, officers say.

K-9 Kyra and her handler, K-9 Officer Brian Delos-Santos, were recently deployed to check a vehicle for possible drugs. The driver had been pulled over by another officer, in response to a report of a vehicle traveling the wrong way on the highway.

When that officer who made the stop suspected drugs, he called for Officer Delos-Santos to assist. It wasn’t long before Kyra indicated drugs in the vehicle. A follow-up search yielded crack cocaine and three pills, police say.

Upon arrest, the suspect was taken to the hospital where it was determined he was experiencing an overdose, according to officials.
