ORLANDO, Fla. (FOX 35 ORLANDO) - An Orlando police officer was arrested and charged with manslaughter on Wednesday stemming from a fatal shooting at the Colonial Plaza in Orlando last year.
Master Police Officer Anthony Wongshue "was notified of the indictment and subsequently turned himself in," according to the Orlando Police Department.
Wongshue has booked into the Orange County jail but has since bonded out.
Investigators said that in May 2018, Wongshue and Officer Juan Abreu approached a minivan after two women were accused of shoplifting from the Marshall's store at the Colonial Plaza. Both officer opened fire when the driver, 32-year-old Juan Silva, started to drive away. Silva was found dead miles away from multiple gunshot wounds, police said.
"He remains employed by the Orlando Police Department on an administrative status pending the outcome of the criminal proceedings."
Officer Abreu was cleared for his involvement in the incident by the State Attorney’s Office on March 13, 2019.
Wongshue is a 17-year law enforcement veteran.
