Teen student, Shannon Rushing, killed by car by school

An 18-year-old high school senior, Shannon Rushing, was killed by a car as she was walking to the bus stop on Oct. 27. "Heartbroken" with the news, the Ocala Police Department are investigating what happened. Parents, teachers and students are in mourning and discuss their shock and concern.

A high school senior in Marion County was hit and killed on Monday morning while on her way to school, according to the Ocala Police Department.

Shannon Rushing, 18, attended Forest High School, part of Marion County Public Schools, officials said.

What we know:

Police said the Forest High School student was walking to the bus stop on Monday morning, around 6:30 a.m., Oct. 27, when she was struck by a vehicle in the 1900 block of NW Old Blitchton Road. She later died, officials said.

The first bell is at 8:30 a.m., according to the school district's website.

A spokesperson for Marion County Public Schools identified her as Shannon Rushing, a senior at Forest High School. She also attended Wards-Highlands Elementary and Howard Middle.

18-year-old Shannon Rushing was walking to the school bus Oct. 27 and was hit and killed by a car. 

School counselors described her as being "very personable, bubbly, and well liked by many, including her teachers and office personnel," the district said in a statement. She had a positive outlook and recently joined the Jesus Club at the high school, the district said.

"We are heartbroken with this news and are supporting the family and school community during this difficult time," the Ocala Police Department said in a statement. 

The district said grief counselors are being made available to students. 

Ocala Police say a Chevy Impala driver, who hit and killed a teen girl Oct. 27, remained at the scene and is cooperating. 

What we know about the driver

Officials said the driver stayed on the scene and is cooperating with investigators.  

What we don't know:

Police have not released details on the crash, or specifics on how it happened. It's also unclear if charges are pending.

Officials said the investigation is in its early stages and is ongoing.
