ORANGE CITY, Fla. (FOX 35 Orlando) - A Volusia County mother’s plan to build a skate park in her dead son’s honor is finally coming to fruition.
This is how Colin Anderson used to spend all his time. Where there was pavement, there was Colin on a skateboard, his mother said.
“They go to the back of movie theaters or the front of storefronts,” Casi Sprague added.
Now, Orange City will have a designated spot for kids to skate, breaking ground Wednesday on Colin’s Dream at Coleman Park, a skate park to be built in his memory after he was hit and killed while riding his skateboard when he was just 12 years old back in 2013.
“I don't need this to make me feel like he's still alive somehow because he's in my heart and he's always with me,” said Sprague.
It’s an idea Sprague came up with years ago on the night of his memorial.
“We were just talking as a family of our loss and how it would be an even further tragedy to have somebody else experience the same thing.”
It took six years of fundraising to get to this point. Organizers hope to have this $200,000 skate park built in five or six weeks.
“It's pretty surreal because there was a point in time when I really didn't think it was going to happen,” said Colin’s friend Andrew DeVito.
But now it finally is.
“It means everything to me. It's the end of a long journey. But it's the beginning of something bigger than any of us.”
