Is necktie becoming a thing of the past?

He’s sold menswear his whole life with a keen eye for formal fashion, and John Siegel said there’s one piece that just tends to make or break the outfit.

“A tie,” said Siegel who owns Siegel’s Clothing in Winter Park. “It adds color, it adds balance, it keeps tradition and it just completes the outfit. It’s knowing how to wear it, knowing how to wear it correctly, knowing when to break the rules, and knowing when to enjoy the rules.”

These days though the rules about the tie just keep getting looser.  Go into many modern offices and you may see few to no ties being worn. Some suits are even being styled to wear without a tie.

Now, the “no tie” movement is gaining even more momentum after a German study found the necktie can cut off some blood flow to the brain and lead to some health issues. It should be noted that study only included a sample of about 30 men, but it’s still making waves. It may even be a lead factor in one California mayor’s move to ban ties in city work places.

While its place may be smaller these days, Siegel said the tie will never die.

“The tie has been around since the 1700s,” he said.

Siegel said while fashion is always changing the tie seems to survive in one form or another. He said losing it all together just isn’t happening.
