Sheriff Judd gives update on bones found
Sheriff Grady Judd held a press conference Friday afternoon to give an update on the bones found near Lakeland Thursday night.
LAKELAND, Fla. - The Polk County Sheriff’s Office started a death investigation after human bones were found near Lakeland Thursday night. The sheriff's office is still working to identify the remains.
What we know:
During a press conference on Friday afternoon, Sheriff Grady Judd said kids were outside playing when they stumbled upon the remains. The five kids, who had just gotten out of school, notified their parents about the remains.
Once the children convinced their parents to see the remains, those parents called law enforcement to report the bones.
About an hour after the children found the remains, Sheriff Judd said deputies were dispatched to the pasture near Fish Hatchery Road and Morgan Combee Road. Deputies found the remains, a skull, mandible and three vertebrates, around 7:47 p.m. Upon this discovery, deputies began a death investigation.
Identity remains unknown
The sheriff said deputies do not believe the remains belong to Tonya Whipp, Ethan Fussell, or Savannah Mahoney.
An autopsy revealed no evidence of damage to the skull. Investigators are working to identify the remains using dental work, such as crowns and fillings that are present on the remains.
What we don't know:
It's unclear how these bones ended up in the pasture. Investigators are still working to determine who they belong to.
