GOP leaders to pick replacement for Hukill

Republican State Executive Committee members from Volusia and Brevard counties will meet Thursday to choose a replacement candidate for state Sen. Dorothy Hukill.
Hukill, a Port Orange Republican, died last week after a battle with cervical cancer. The Republican Party of Florida said in a news release that they were meeting in New Smyrna Beach.
People interested in being considered to run are required to submit resumes and letters of intent by 3 p.m. Thursday.
At the time of her death, Hukill was seeking re-election in Senate District 14, which is made up of parts of both counties. The replacement candidate will have to run with Hukill’s name on the ballot, as vote-by-mail ballots have already gone out, and will face Democrat Melissa “Mel” Martin in the Nov. 6 election.
