2 killed in crash on Florida Turnpike in St. Cloud; southbound lanes closed, FHP says

Two people were killed Tuesday in a crash on the Florida Turnpike in Oceola County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The southbound lanes are closed at mile marker 240 in Saint Cloud, FHP said. Traffic is being diverted at US 192, or mile marker 244.

The backstory:

FHP said the crash was reported around 1:10 p.m. and involved a 2007 Toyota FJ cruiser with two people inside.

According to FHP, the vehicle was traveling southbound on the Florida Turnpike when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle drove off the roadway and hit the inside concrete barrier. The vehicle then overcorrected and traveled to the right, across the freeway, overturned and hit another barrier on the right side.

The driver, a 56-year-old man from Kissimmee, was rushed to the hospital where he died, FHP said. The passenger, a 65-year-old woman from Kissimmee, was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene, FHP said.
