Florida man undergoing surgery after being shot by his dad diagnosed with dementia

A man was airlifted to the hospital after authorities say he was shot by his father – an elderly man with dementia, deputies say.

The Osceola County Sheriff's office responded to an area on Westmoreland Circle in Kissimmee regarding a shooting that took place around 12:40 p.m. on April 3. 

What we know:

The sheriff's office reported that a man in his 50s was shot and is undergoing surgery for his injuries. 

The Westmoreland neighborhood in Kissimmee where a man reportedly shot his son. 

Now, an 85-year-old man – the shooting victim's father – is in custody, deputies said. The elderly man, who deputies said is diagnosed with dementia, is currently being interviewed by detectives. 

Deputies responded to the Kissimmee home three times in the past 10 days – including Friday – regarding arguments between the father and son. Both the father and son live in the house together, deputies said.

It's not known if the shooting occurred indoors or outside. 

Deputies are investigating why the shooting occurred.
