Flags stolen on Independence Day in Avalon Park

A showing of patriotism by several local Girl Scouts needed some last minute community support after a scrooge stole their flags.

On Tuesday night, 13 year-old Victoria White and for fellow scouts in Troop 4638 posted up small American flags throughout Avalon Park’s green space; an annual tradition after the troop raised the resources to put on the display. By Wednesday morning though, a large number of the flags were missing.

"It's not the first time this has happened,” said Victoria who’s Troop has had to scramble to replace flags in the past.

This year though, not only marking America’s birthday but also Victoria’s grandfather’s 70th birthday. Her family was instantly disappointed the Viet Nam veteran may not have the display to enjoy, but they said the disappointment was quickly replaced.

"I wasn't surprised that our community did it again,” said Victoria.

Her neighbors throughout Avalon Park began offering up donations to replace the flags and help the troop get even more flags to add to their display.  Victoria said now their future displays will be larger than ever.

"That's what this is all about: patriotism, love of America, and reminding people freedom isn't free,” said her dad Jake White.
