DELTONA, Fl. (WOFL FOX 35) - A 17-year-old bystander is recovering after she was shot in the knee after her stepfather and his brother-in-law got into an argument over politics.
Volusia County Sheriff's Office responded to a home on Shingler Terrace for a report of shots fired during a birthday party.
Deputies learned that the teenager was shot by her stepfather, Jose Amaro, 41.
Amaro and his brother-in-law- got into a heated discussion about "politics, Trump and the situation in Puerto Rico," a deputy wrote in his incident report.
The argument escalated, Amaro allegedly shoved his brother-in-law, went inside and grabbed a handgun.
Other people at the party attempted to restrain Amaro, but he fired one shot into the yard before he was tackled.
The bullet hit his step-daughter in the right knee.
Amaro was arrested without without incident. According to deputies, he remained on scene and was treating the victim's wound when deputies arrived.
Amaro was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon as well as possession of ammunition by a convicted felon and two counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
