A DeLand city commissioner was arrested on Wednesday, accused of drug trafficking.

Jeffrey Hunter, 59, was taken into custody by agents with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement on a charge of sale or delivery of hydrocodone.

The investigation was launched after the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office asked FDLE to look into allegations that Hunter was trafficking narcotics.  The Sheriff's Office says they learned Hunter may be involved with the sale of drugs while they were investigating a complaint that he was a victim of fraud and extortion.

Hunter told detectives his former girlfriend and her boyfriend, Jose Santiago, were blackmailing him. Santiago was arrested and charged with extortion.

FDLE’s investigation began in February 2018, during which time, agents say they determined Hunter had given his former girlfriend hydrocodone pills on at least seven separate occasions.

Hunter was booked in the Volusia County Jail on a $25,000 bond.
