ORLANDO, Fla. (FOX 35 WOFL) - Orlando City Council is planning a vote on a new partnership plan with Orlando Police and it would school city schools with officers. However, this would come with a big price tag for city.
The plan is all to comply with the School Safety Law that went into effect after the shooting in Parkland, Florida. Once the agreement is official, the police department will work to fill the 15 new positions. So far this school year, officers have been working extra duty or overtime to cover the schools.
The plan would cost $7.2 million, but Orange County Public Schools would reimburse the city for $2.9 million of that.
The vote in Orlando follows a move by Orange County to hire 75 new deputies to serve as school resource officers at schools in the county.
