Volusia County deputies investigate a deadly shooting in DeLand on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2026.
VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. - A man was killed Tuesday after a trespassing dispute escalated into a shooting, according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.
What we know:
Deputies and officers with the DeLand Police Department responded to a trespassing complaint at a residence on North Boulevard Court around 10:47 p.m.
The caller told dispatchers he shot a trespasser, who was found sleeping in the laundry room of the house, according to the sheriff's office.
When deputies arrived, they found the caller standing by the road with his hands raised. The man accused of trespassing was found lying in the driveway with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to deputies.
After the shooter found the man in the laundry room, the two got into an argument, according to deputies. The shooter told deputies the man "advanced" toward him during the argument despite repeated warnings to step back or he would be shot.
The shooter then fired several shots, according to investigators.
Investigators said the man who was shot had previously stayed on and off the property but was no longer allowed to stay there.

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office has not shared any other details about the investigation.
