SunRail announces expansion of hours

SunRail will expand its evening schedule next month, adding two late-night trips for riders traveling between Poinciana and DeLand.

SunRail is looking to add some late-night train rides to its schedule next month for evening commuters. The additional rides would expand SunRail's total rides from 40 to 42, connecting Poinciana and DeLand.

What we know:

SunRail's Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) met Wednesday and approved the proposed late-night routes. However, it still requires overall approval from the Central Florida Commuter Rail Commission, which is scheduled to meet on Sept. 25.

Under the proposal, SunRail would add two late-evening trips to its weekday schedule.

  • The last northbound train would leave Poinciana at 8:45 p.m. and reach DeLand by 10:26 p.m.
  • The last southbound train would depart DeLand at 9:55 p.m. and arrive in Poinciana at 11:38 p.m.

SunRail officials said the additional routes would add 2,000 riders and up to $10,000 in revenue each month.

The backstory:

The additional trips come after years of commuter feedback requesting later trains. Until now, SunRail’s service ended too early for many riders attending Orlando Magic games, concerts, or community events, forcing them to find alternate transportation.

Officials say the new plan repurposes trains that would otherwise head back to the Sanford hub unused.
