VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. (FOX 35 WOFL) - A Volusia County student was denied lunch because she was $0.15 short on cash last week. Now, her mother is making sure this never happens to anyone else.
Kimberly Aiken says she is on a mission to help kids who can't afford to pay for school lunch. She isn't just keeping her efforts local, though. She is hoping to go statewide.
Aiken is starting a Go Fund Me account that will help kids pay for lunches after what happened to he daughter. The page is called 'No Student Deserves To Go Hungry.' She says if a child is short on their lunch money, then the account can be used to cover the gap.
The district says it is not policy to refuse lunch to a child and officials are looking into what happened. Aiken says she plans on going to the next school board meeting to share her idea.
