DELAND, Fla. - A Debary man was arrested after police say he shot another man at a house party, Sunday night.
What we know:
Dawson Summers, 23, is facing an aggravated battery with a deadly weapon charge after officials said he shot a man after they fought.
The DeLand Police Department responded to a home on Kentucky Avenue around 3 a.m., Nov. 9, finding a 22-year-old man from Deltona with two gunshot wounds. The Deltona man was transferred to the hospital for treatment.
Through an investigation by the DeLand Police Department Criminal Investigations Division, investigators said witnesses claimed Summers came to the party already intoxicated and carrying a gun. Witnesses said Summers was antagonizing the Deltona man about his truck, during which the man asked Summers if he wanted to fight and settle the issue, police said.
After the Deltona man knocked Summers to the ground, Summers shot at him, investigators said.
Witnesses told police Summers ran to the laundry room to hide the gun. Investigators later found the gun hidden in the laundry room, police said.
Summers tried to open the door to his car to get in, but witnesses held him until police arrived, the department said.
The other side:
According to DeLand Police, Summers told officers he was at a birthday party for his friend when he recognized some people he had disagreements with. Summers said he met the victim for the first time that night. The department redacted portions of Summers' statement, but said that Summers stated that he feared for his safety and drew his gun.
What we don't know:
The severity of the Deltona man's injuries are not known.
What's next:
Summers was transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail without incident, officers said. This incident remains under investigation.
