Volusia schools to test drone program aimed at stopping shootings

Volusia County Schools will be one of three districts in Florida to test a new high-tech security program that uses fleets of drones to respond to potential school shootings. District officials say the number of drones deployed at each campus will vary based on size and layout. Most schools would have 20 to 30 drones, while larger campuses could have as many as 90.

Bond denied for man accused of shooting, killing girlfriend

Tyjah Bellinger, 23, faces a charge of first-degree premeditated murder in the shooting death of his girlfriend, 28-year-old Lendzi Lakeman. A judge ordered Monday that he remain in custody. His arraignment is scheduled for December.

Escaped inmate captured in swampy water after hours-long search

Deputies in Sumter County captured an escaped inmate late Thursday after finding him waist-deep in murky water, according to body camera video released by the sheriff’s office. The footage shows deputies ordering the man to get out of the water and lie on the ground.
