Orlando weather: Heavy rain brings some flooding risk across Central Florida

ORLANDO, Fla. - Deep tropical moisture is locked in over Central Florida with a weak frontal boundary draped across the region. 

Combined with the daily sea breeze collision, rain chances stay in the "likely category" near 60% into the evening. 

Low-end flood risk

Storms will be slow movers, making heavy rainfall the primary concern. 

Widespread totals of 1 to 2 inches are expected, but a training storm, where multiple downpours hit the same neighborhood, could quickly drop localized totals higher than 3–4 inches. 

While a major flooding event is not anticipated, a level 1/4 flood risk exists today for low-lying areas, urban locations with poor drainage, and roadways prone to ponding water. 

Frequent lightning and gusty wind are also on the table. Elevated storm coverage continues through midweek with higher than normal chances holding into this upcoming weekend.

Clouds, rain keep temperatures lower

With lots of clouds and rain developing earlier in the afternoon, high temperatures will be capped in the upper 80s to near 90° for most of Central Florida into Wednesday.

 Despite slightly lower air temperatures, atmospheric moisture remains extremely high. 

How hot will it get?:

Humidity levels will keep heat indices hotter than 100° during midday gaps in rain before widespread showers provide cooling relief. 

Temps stay close to average but increase a touch by the end of the week as sunshine increases.

Quiet Atlantic at peak of hurricane season

Despite approaching the historical peak of hurricane season, the Atlantic basin remains remarkably quiet.

Pockets of dry air and unfavorable upper-level wind shear across the open ocean continue to block tropical development. 

The National Hurricane Center expects no tropical cyclone formation across the Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, or Gulf over the next 7 days.
