A man involved in a domestic disturbance was shot and killed by a Brevard County deputy after pointing a gun at law enforcement early Tuesday morning, authorities said.

"He actually said something to the effect of, ‘it's game over,' and even shared with one of our telecommunicators that they were going to have to come inside and shoot him," Sheriff Wayne Ivey said in an update shared on Facebook.

Around 3:45 a.m., the man came out of the home holding a gun and pointed it at law enforcement, prompting a deputy to fire his weapon, officials said. The man was taken to a local hospital where he died. No deputies were hurt.

"While my heart goes out to those that are struggling with a mental health disorder, it doesn't give them the right to put our deputies' lives at risk," Ivey said.

The deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave, pending the results of the investigation, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.

The identities of the parties involved were not immediately released.
