Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin made his first court appearance Monday in the death of George Floyd, where a judge set his bail at $1.25 million with no conditions. Chauvin, a veteran police officer, was seen putting his knee on the back of Floyd’s neck’s as he repeatedly said he could not breathe. 

The Twin Cities metro is healing following the death of George Floyd and destructive riots. The efforts to help families to rebuild neighborhoods is just starting and some of the biggest ideas are coming from small efforts.

Friends, family and much of the community said goodbye to George Floyd at a memorial service in Minneapolis Thursday afternoon, the first of three memorial services for Floyd before his funeral in Houston next week. 

The civil rights activist called for all Americans to continue the fight for racial equality that began hundreds of years ago. 

Of the demonstrations that have engulfed the city and the nation, and the violence that has taken place, he said, “I’m proud of the protests but I'm not proud of the destruction. My brother wasn’t about that. The Floyds are a God-fearing family.”

Tou Thao, Thomas Lane and J. Alexander Kueng were making their first appearances in Hennepin County District Court since their arrests Wednesday.

The first of three memorial services for George Floyd will take place in Minneapolis Thursday afternoon. 

The Minneapolis police officer who used his knee to pin down George Floyd’s neck before his death was the most experienced of the four officers involved in the arrest, with a record that included medals for bravery and 17 complaints against him, including one for pulling a woman out of her car during a speeding stop.

UPDATE: Minnesota Public Safety Commissioner John Harrington confirmed Monday it appears Sunday's incident was not an intentional act. The driver was already on the freeway when it closed and did not go around any barricades. 

Officials announced Wednesday that former officer Derek Chauvin is now charged with both third and second-degree murder, and the other officers involved in George Floyd's arrest have been charged. The attorney for Floyd's family called this "a bittersweet moment."

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison announced Wednesday he has upgraded the charges against former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin to second-degree murder and filed charges against the other three officers involved in George Floyd's death.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz made an unannounced visit to the memorial for George Floyd in south Minneapolis on Wednesday morning, his first time seeing the site where Floyd died.

The family of George Floyd visited Minneapolis Wednesday to see the intersection where he was pinned to the ground by police. Family members - including Floyd's son, Quincy - were accompanied by their lawyer, Benjamin Crump, as they saw for the first time the memorial that has been set up at 38th and Chicago Avenue.

Small businesses, many minority-owned, are bearing the costs of the destruction and struggling to survive after the crippling coronavirus shutdowns.

Dozens of incidents were reported over the weekend in which reporters were “injured, assaulted or harassed by either protesters or police officers.”

Under "other significant conditions” it said Floyd suffered from heart disease and hypertension, and listed fentanyl intoxication and recent methamphetamine use. Those factors were not listed under cause of death.

Former Minneapolis Police Chief Janeé Harteau and others are calling for Police Union President Lt. Bob Kroll to step down after a letter to union members surfaced in which he blamed politicians and local leaders for the riots in Minneapolis over the death of George Floyd. 

The FBI is asking individuals who were in the area before, during, or after George Floyd’s death to share any information, photos, or videos that could be relevant to the case.
