Good Samaritan helps save 80-year-old man who drove into Winter Park pond

Dramatic bodycam video shows Winter Park police and firefighters working side-by-side to rescue an 80-year-old man who drove into a pond. But they might not have even known it happened, were it not for Nathaniel Camacho.

"As I looked to my left, I saw headlights go up in the air and flash my face a bit, and then all I see is this truck going down slowly into the body of water over there," Camacho said.

What we know:

Camacho works at the Winter Park Racquet Club, nearby.

He was getting the courts ready at 5:30 in the morning when he saw the headlights and heard the splash from the truck going into the water.

"He just veered off," he said, "and took a hard turn right down." Thinking fast, Camacho – who was also a lifeguard - flagged-down a police officer and got the man help quickly.

City officials say the victim may have suffered a medical emergency.

"By the time we got there we saw it was an elderly guy in the truck. We were trying to get his attention and he wasn't responsive, but he was conscious," Camacho said.

Fire crews showed up, and first responders rescued the man and used a winch to haul the truck out of the water.

Camacho's coworker Nancy McGann said she was proud of his actions.

"His thought was that's what he was trained to do, but as we all know, just 'cause you're trained doesn't mean when it really happens you'll be able to handle it. And he handled everything professionally and beautifully."

City officials said Camacho helped save the man's life.

The victim was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

What they're saying:

Club managers even sent a message to all the members letting them know about Camacho’s heroism. "He went right in, didn't worry about anything," said club member Alexandra Allen, "just jumped into action."
