LAKE COUNTY, Fla. (FOX 35 WOFL) - Kids are about to go back to school and joining them will be thousands of cops. Florida's new safety law means there will be more school resource officers walking the halls.
A lot of school districts already had a school resource officer in middle and high schools, so for them, the biggest difference is assigning one at every elementary school.
The first deputy we spoke with in Lake County says that he volunteered to work with the little kids because he has seen the difference he's been able to make with the big ones.
Deputy Robert Holcomb and Deputy Evan Rosenstein say that the ability to help set kids on a good path is why they choose to be school resource deputies. Holcomb is one of 21 officers who will be in elementary schools this year.
Next week, Deputy Evan Rosenstein starts his second full year at Eustis Middle School, focusing on getting to know the kids as much as safety. The deputies say that building relationships all year long is just as important as what they'll do if they are faced with a threat.
