DeSantis gets some schooling on coding, computer science
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Gov. Ron DeSantis got a little bit of schooling on coding and computer science.
The Republican governor took part Tuesday in an event promoting computer skills in Florida schools. DeSantis spent a few minutes huddling with 16-year-old Emily Perez, a sophomore at Lincoln High School in Tallahassee, over a laptop alongside a dozen other students.
DeSantis said nearly every business, government entity or other enterprise in Florida has some technology component. Microsoft Corp. executives who staged Tuesday's event said there are about 8,000 open computer and data science jobs in Florida.
The governor says he wants the state to be a leader in coding, adding "we want to make sure our students are equipped going forward."
DeSantis has proposed making computer science an official science credit in Florida schools.
