Girl, 12, injured in accidental shooting at Florida home

EUSTIS, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Sheriff's officials in central Florida say a 12-year-old girl has been injured in an accidental shooting at a home.

Lake County Sheriff's Lt. John Herrell said detectives are confident the Wednesday night shooting was accidental.   

"I jumped up and run out the door, because I could hear all the yelling going on, 'She's shot in the head! She's shot in the head!'" said neighbor Paul Brantley.  

According to an incident report, the girl was with a 7-year-old child on Wednesday night when they found a gun in a bag. They gave it to a woman inside the home. The 32-year-old woman, who wasn't named in the report, told deputies the gun went off as it was being handed to her.

"The bullet hit the top of her little head ... rolled around the scalp and come out the back of the scalp," Brantley explained.  "I could see where it rolled, because I could feel it with the back of my finger."

The girl was shot in the head, but officials said her injuries aren't considered life-threatening.

"God saved that little girl for us! There's no way around it. No way around it," Brantley added.

Deputies say the gun belonged to the boyfriend of the woman who accidentally shot the child. They say it's likely charges will be filed.
