Firefighters battle industrial park blaze in Ormond Beach

Firefighters have been battling a large fire a manufacturing plant at the Ormond Beach Airport Business Park.  The fire is mostly contained and now crews from Volusia County and Ormond Beach are working to clean up.

The call came in at 2 p.m. on Friday, reporting a massive smoke column and flames behind the Florida Production Engineering building on Tower Circle.  The company makes plastic and metal parts for cars.  There are more than 200 workers who were forced out of the building by the fire, with many of them resting in the shade and drinking water.  There were searing hot conditions for fire fighters, between the weather and the heat from the flames.

One fire fighter said the fire happened on the loading dock behind the building.  A surveyor who saw the damage said most of the damage is to a trash compactor and damage to part of the building itself.   A company spokesman said they are not ready yet to comment on the fire and the Ormond Beach fire chief on the scene has been too busy to talk to the media.

This remains an active scene, as the state fire marshal is expected to investigate the exact cause.
