Hurricane Tammy intensifies to Cat. 2 in the Atlantic: Here's how it could impact Florida

Hurricane Tammy strengthened to a Category 2 storm after its maximum sustained winds increased to near 100 mph over the open Atlantic Wednesday morning.

The National Hurricane Center some additional strengthening is possible today, followed by weakening through late this week.

Tammy is located about 540 miles south-southeast of Bermuda. It is moving toward the northeast near 10 mph.

The Cat. 2 storm is forecast to turn northward later today, followed by a slower northwestward motion onThursday and Friday.

Will Hurricane Tammy impact Florida?

Tammy is not expected to impact Florida directly, but the state could see some indirect effects.

"Indirectly, we actually could be seeing a rise in the wave height," FOX 35 Storm Team Meteorologist Allison Gargaro said. "Our forecast modeling does show that it does expand as Tammy makes its way to the west and then as soon as that cold front takes it, we're likely going to be seeing a decrease in those waves here locally, but they are likely going to be choppy for the next few days."
Tammy is the 19th named storm and the seventh hurricane to form this season.

Two names remain on the list – Vince and Whitney.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs through Nov. 30.
