ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - The wife of U.S. Representative Darren Soto was arrested late Sunday night for Disorderly Intoxication.
Amanda Soto was arrested by Orange County Sheriff's deputies Sunday evening at Disney Springs.
According to the arrest report, a security guard noticed Amanda Soto, 33 and her mother struggling with each other as they waited in the West bus loop at Disney Springs and called him over.
Early Monday morning Amanda Soto bonded out after spending hours overnight behind bars.
The deputy says both women appeared drunk, so he tried to help them into an Uber and that’s when Amanda Soto began “screaming profanities” at him and the Uber driver.
After trying repeatedly to calm Soto down, the deputy says he placed her under arrest due to “growing anger towards law enforcement and unrelated members of the public.”
According to the officer, at one point Soto said “that her husband is a congressman therefore she can do anything she wants.”
Darren Soto is a first-term congressman who represents parts of Orange, Osceola and Polk Counties. He’s up for reelection.
He released the following statement Monday morning:
"My wife, Amanda, has for years suffered from depression and been under medical care. In accordance with her treatment plan and under her doctor's supervision, she recently stopped using her medication. Yesterday, she drank too much and reached an argumentative state with a family member, which led to arrest. She deeply regrets her actions and takes full responsibility for them. Amanda and her physician will be reviewing her mental health treatment, immediately."
According to the report, the congressman was with his wife and mother-in-law at Disney Springs Sunday.
The charge against Amanda Soto is a misdemeanor.
