Man arrested after threatening someone with a rock

A man was arrested and charged after stealing from a store and then threatening someone with a rock when confronted about it. After being caught, he was seen smiling in his mugshot photo.

The Odessa Police Department says that they arrested 36-year-old Shawn Paul Melonakos on Saturday at about 7:23 p.m. for Robbery, 2nd Degree Felony; Possession of Methamphetamine, State Jail Felony; False Identification -- Fugitive from Justice, Class A Misdemeanor; and for a parole violation warrant.

Officers say they responded to the Door of Hope Thrift Store on East 8th Street in reference to a robbery. Investigation revealed that a male subject, identified as Melonakos, took merchandise and exited the store without making any attempt to pay. When the complainant confronted him about the stolen merchandise, Melonakos picked up a large rock and threatened him with it.

The complainant reportedly feared for his life and brandished a firearm before firing one round. The complainant and another male subject chased Melonakos to the area of Crescent and Beverly and detained him until officers arrived on scene. The suspect initially gave officers a false name and date of birth, but he was eventually properly identified.

The department says that their investigation revealed that Melonakos had a parole violation warrant and officers found him to be in possession of methamphetamine. Melonakos was charged, arrested accordingly, and transported.

There were no reported injuries.
