Fox 35 (WOFL) - Raymond Moore, the tournament director of the BNP Paribas Open, has resigned.
His decision comes after he made some controversial comments about professional female tennis players on Sunday.
During a media event he said female tennis players “ride on the coattails of men.” He also added that women should “get down on their knees and thank God for the men that have carried the sport.”
Several tennis stars have responded to the comments, including Serena Williams.
During a press conference she said, “Obviously, I don’t think any woman should be down on their knees thanking anybody like that.” In addition to that she added that there are plenty of men and women in the sport that are exciting to watch.
The owner of the tournament said it was Moore’s decision to step down.
