The holiday season can be chaotic! You’re busy shopping, planning, and trying to balance everyday life! Unfortunately, a lot of people get caught up in the craziness of the holidays and forget to practice safe driving while they’re out and about. You’ll find yourself on the road a lot during the holidays, especially on Thanksgiving and Christmas when you’re heading to the homes of family and friends. According to AAA, Thanksgiving is one of the busiest days of the year on the road – and also one of the most dangerous.

Safe driving tips for the holidays

You should always make an effort to practice safe driving while you’re behind the wheel. However, on busy holidays like Thanksgiving, you should be extra careful on the roads! There will be more people on the roads and motorists will be driving recklessly, trying to get to their destination on time. If you’re planning on driving this Thanksgiving, Toyota of Clermont suggests brushing up on safe driving tips like:

  • Use defensive driving. Pay attention to your surroundings at all times. Stay alert and aware so you’re able to predict any sudden moves by drivers. You should also leave a safe following distance between your Clermont Toyota and other cars in front of you.
  • Abide by road rules and road signs. Obey the speed limit while driving and observe road signs, like coming to complete stops at stop signs and yielding to oncoming traffic.
  • Avoid distracted driving. Distracted driving is considering anything that takes your eyes off of the road, hands off of the wheel, and focus off of driving. While you’re in the driver’s seat, you should avoid any and all distractions. Keep your phone out of sight and out of reach so you won’t be tempted to check it!

  • Thanksgiving is also infamous for the holiday with the most traffic fatalities. Statistically, most of the traffic fatalities were due to drunk driving. This Thanksgiving, it’s crucial that you avoid drunk driving. If you have been drinking, do NOT get behind the wheel. If you need to get home, have a friend or a cab pick you up and give you a ride. You should also report any drunk driving you see, to the police. Look out for erratic driving behaviors like swerving, sudden stops, quick acceleration, or driving at night without headlights. If you do spot drunk driving, stay a safe distance away and call the authorities, giving them a description of the car and the driver, including the license plate number.

Road trip safely with your Clermont Toyota

If you’re heading out of town for the holidays, make sure you use extra precaution when driving in unfamiliar territory! Place close attention to road signs and traffic signals. Don’t forget to use cruise control when appropriate (open highway) and to turn it off when it’s not (rain, heavy traffic, etc.).
