Plasencia plans House re-election bid

State Rep. Rene Plasencia, R-Orlando, plans to run for a fourth term in 2020, while a Republican primary contest could be brewing in a race to succeed Rep. Halsey Beshears, R-Monticello.

Plasencia on Monday opened a campaign account to run again in 2020 in House District 50, which is made up of parts of Orange and Brevard counties, according to the state Division of Elections website. Plasencia received 55.3 percent of the vote as he won a third term in the Nov. 6 elections.

Also on Monday, Republican Jason Shoaf opened a campaign account to run in House District 7, where Beshears will be barred from running in 2020 because of term limits. Shoaf joined Republican Mike Watkins, who opened a campaign account in February for the race and had raised $123,707 as of Nov. 30.

District 7 is a massive, largely rural district that includes Calhoun, Franklin, Gulf, Jefferson, Lafayette, Liberty, Madison, Taylor, Wakulla and part of Leon counties.
