Orlando Union Rescue Mission working with city on new facility

One of Orlando's oldest homeless centers may have found a new home, and they don't have to move very far.

The Orlando Union Rescue Mission is working with Orlando officials to acquire city-owned land just a few blocks away from their current location on Central Boulevard in Parramore.  The Mission has to move to make room for the Orlando Magic's $200-million entertainment complex.

The center planned to build a new shelter on land it owned on Old Winter Garden Road.  But residents and churches complained about the potential for crime and lowered property values.

"We have been working with them for the last month or so when some of the discord arose to see if we could find a different location for them.  I think we found a fantastic location in Parramore about 3 or 4 blocks just south of where their current location is," said Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer.

It's not a done deal yet.  The city still has to advertise the sale of the land and other projects have the opportunity to bid on it.  It also has to be approved by the city's planning board.
