Orange Co. Fire Rescue to create calendar for charity

Orange County Fire Rescue personnel will be losing a garment or two to raise money for United Way and its agency partners.

Organizers within the department said their so-called inaugural calendar is just a twist on their annual effort to contribute to the community outside of their jobs.

A fundraiser, where the lucky 12 will be chosen, is being held on May 9 at The Abbey in Downtown Orlando. The calendar is expected to be released in August.

In the meantime, interested male and female staffers are gearing up for the fun-filled competition. On that list of about 28 is Lieutenant Mike Ramos.

Ramos said he will be using his sense of humor among other things to win a spot on the calendar.

"My Latin swing. I'm just kidding," said Lt. Ramos, who also mentioned that he wanted to be Mr. August.

"It's for a great cause," said Lieutenant Thomas Veal. "A lot of the proceeds from the calendar and from the event will go to the Firefighter Cancer Support Network, which is very important to us right now because cancer, right now, nationwide, is the leading cause of firefighter deaths."

Organizers say the event and calendar will be tastefully done and will help showcase the department's focus on improved health and wellness.

"I might rip the pants, so I'm not going to do squats," joked Lt. Ramos as he gave FOX 35 a quick overview of his workout at the station gym.

More information on how the public can join in on the fun and help out can be found on the fundraiser's website, here.
