Need a job? Marion Co. Schools hiring at least 300 teachers

Do you need a job? For the first time in years, Marion County Public Schools is looking to hire at least 300 teachers.

Kevin Christian, spokesman for Marion County Public Schools, said, "This is the first opportunity that we've really had as a district to go out there and really corral the troops, if you will."

Those 'teacher troops' can now come to the educational front-lines. Christian said voters in Marion County passed a referendum last fall that will specifically pay for additional art, music, library sciences and physical education teachers. He said it'll also help reduce class sizes. He said $15 million is coming from the local community.

"We're looking for mainly art, music, physical education and library media services," Christian said. "But, we really have openings at every level."

The district is looking for teachers K-12. Starting salaries could be from $36,300 to $42,800, plus benefits.

Briana Hollister, 22, of Ocala, is unemployed and looking for a teaching job to begin her career.

"I'm hoping for either a kindergarten or first grade position in the public school system," she said.

Hollister graduates college soon and admits she has had some low confidence points in the job search. Though, she says things are looking up now.

"It's going pretty well," She said. "I've been in communication with a few principals here."

For her, the teaching jobs on the table are music to her ears. It sparks hope, not only of landing a position within a classroom, but also bring about feelings of being "excited to impact students positively."

According to the district, it will hold a Teacher Recruiting Fair on Friday and Saturday, May 15-16, at the College of Central Florida's Ewers Center in Ocala.

The Fair runs from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. on Friday and from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Registration is required.
