Elton John, Amway Center reveal details on canceled show

Fans anxiously waiting for music legend Sir Elton John to take the stage Tuesday night were met with disappointing news instead.

Due to an ear infection, the 71-year-old singer would not be taking the stage.  Hold onto your tickets, this Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour stop would be canceled.

“Elton was here in the building. He was tended to by physicians. He was antibiotics for a few days who advised him that it was not good for him to perform.  He performs live,” said Allen Johnson, Chief Venues Officer for the City of Orlando.

Johnson says the music legend was dressed and preparing to take the stage when his team made the call around 7:45 p.m.

“He performs live. When he does his show, he has to hear his band.  How he hears them is through his ear monitors and when he put his ear monitors in it was too painful for him to continue and to perform for the show,” Johnson explained.

Many fans thought the announcement was a bad joke at first.  When the house lights came on, fans started standing up and walking out.  One couple from told The News Station they flew down from Boston to celebrate a birthday with Elton.

“And then at 20 after 8 he tells us he can’t make it, seems a little off key there. Pretty disappointed, don’t know how we’re going to be able to get back here and see him again because we spent a lot of money to get here.”

Elton John’s team released a statement on social media saying in part, “with impaired hearing and ear pain he wouldn’t have been able to deliver the performance his fans deserve.”  Johnson says his team and the Amway Center are now working together to come up with a new concert date.  They’re hoping fans forgive them for last nights last minute cancelation.
